September 30, 2021 (Riga, Latvia) – European, North and Latin American and Asian drone show experts have joined efforts for the 2nd year in a row to unveil the best practices of the growing industry and run the Second International Drone Show Competition. The goal is to bring together the best representatives, their shows, animations and business approaches to exchange knowledge about breakthrough sustainable technologies for outdoor light events. Each of six winners will receive a diploma, special prize, and educational and marketing support.

Participants need to submit their project videos to compete in one or more of six categories: ‘Best drone show 3D animation’, ‘Best drone show up to 100 drones’, ‘Best drone show over 100 drones and up to 1000 drones’, ‘Best drone show over 1000 drones’, ‘Best integrated drone show’, ‘Best drone show business promo video’. The application period is September 30 – November 30, 2021, with the winners to be announced on December 21, 2021. They will be granted diplomas and included in the event promo campaign. Authors of drone show animations will also compete for MacBook Pro 13, while other nomination participants will compete for drone show operator kits (a set of items that an operator always needs for a comfortable process of organizing a drone show). Noticeably, the kit for “Best drone show over 1,000 drones” includes a DJI FPV drone.

‘The first competition was established to create global awareness for artists that there is the industry of drone shows that can open up opportunities. The big idea behind it was to start building up a community of like-minded people passionate about drones and modern art. Within a year, we have observed a rapid growth of drone shows as an event form and decided to expand the concept into a multidisciplinary contest of both animations and real performed drone shows’, comments Alexey Dobrovolskiy, CTO at SPH Engineering.

The competition is initiated and organized by SPH Engineering, the company behind the first commercially available Drone Show Software to manage swarms of light drones. The international judging panel consists of Alexey Dobrovolskiy, SPH Engineering (Latvia); Angelito Diaz Jadormeo, 2020 Competition winner (Philippines); Hyon Lim, Uvify (USA); Luke Carothers, Civil+Structural Engineer Media (USA); and other event and drone industry entrepreneurs, hardware manufacturers, experts at international organizations and educational bodies.

Drone Show Software by SPH Engineering, a Riga-based UgCS software developer and integration services provider for unmanned aerial systems, as well as Swiss Drone Show, a European event agency focused on drone show solutions, and Pinnacle Festivals, a leading US producer of themed-based immersive event experiences, have announced an international partnership to develop drone-based outdoor light show solutions customized to ski resorts. The aim is to advance drone show WOW-applications during winter time, including those manageable high in the mountains and in low temperatures.

Drone shows are a fresh and highly demanded form of entertainment, combining technology and art. With live events being limited during the worldwide pandemic of 2020, viewing shows from far away is becoming more popular. As such, the drone show industry turns out to be one of the most promising solution providers for outdoor events in the new normal.

“SPH Engineering’s Drone Show Software team has been providing the only commercially available software to manage outdoor light shows controlling up to hundreds of drones since 2017. We are happy to make this step forward and bring together global experts for knowledge, creativity and technology exchange and share our lessons learnt in various show scenarios,” Alexey Dobrovolsky, SPH Engineering’s CTO, comments.

“The 1,000+ drone show prerecorded high in the mountains for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics demonstrated that drones could do the job in low temperatures possible. Last year Swiss Drone Show accepted the challenge of St. Moritz ski resort in Switzerland to make a festive 100-drone light show and wish a Happy New Year to resort visitors in an innovative way. The creative part included several local stories. From the tech perspective, we needed to find a way to adjust batteries to cold temperature’, Marc Loosli, CTO & Co-Founder, Swiss Drone Show, explains. “We are proud that the ski resort is happy with the experience and would like to make another drone show as the COVID-19 rules complaints event to celebrate New Year 2021.”

“Pinnacle Festivals is excited about the opportunity to light up the night sky of ski resorts. We are grateful to our European partners who have agreed to advise us on the best winter drone show practices to make sure that drone show as a WOW-solution would be well-performed keeping in mind height and temperature limitations. A drone show is a very flexible event element: it can be performed as a single proper show, or integrated into any night show being mixed with fireworks, laser, sound and music, or be considered as a small WOW-effect performance. Not long ago we developed a so-called ‘3 drone demo’ suitcase. This unique way of drone show equipment packaging enables fast, easy and safe delivery of everything needed for small trial activities in any US location,’ John Eric Henry, Head of Pinnacle Festivals, explains.

SPH Engineering releases Drone Show Software update making it compatible with time code machines, bringing new tool for the entertainment industry to integrate drone shows with any outdoor events and performances. This integration was firstly presented during an event on 4th of July combining two drone fleets equipped with lights and pyro, and fireworks in synchronised formations with music.

The released update of Drone Show Software enables entertainment industry to use drones not only as a standalone performance perfectly synchronised to music, but also to integrate drone shows as a part of more complex outdoor happenings like, concerts, laser or fountain show or firework displays.

The option to equip drones with not only lights adds an extra layer of versatility of drone application for the entertainment industry – enhancing or replacing show elements which can’t be used for certain events because of increased fire, loudness or flashing hazard.

How it works
The timecode with music is started from one controlling computer and passed over to all the receiving hardware – fireworks control panel and drone show controlling computer. Once the timecode is started, the show is initialised and all components wait for starting command. The video recording presents how accurate the drones and fireworks create synchronised formations and interact with the music rhythm.

“SPH Engineering is honoured delivering new Drone Show Software offering fundamentally new event experience. The new tool allows to integrate all essential elements for an excellent performance, like music, special effects and drone dance which can also be delivered as a digital entertainment. We are very excited to deliver a solution to the demanding customers who thrive for excellence to ensure them the possibility to create new level shows,” says Alexey Dobrovolskiy, CTO of SPH Engineering.

The 4th of July show for Independence day celebration is a collaboration of three companies based in Latvia (EU):

  • BaseMotion – choreography and flight planning of drones
  • SPH Engineering – drone fleet, hardware and Drone Show Software
  • IFD International Fireworks Design – pyrotechnics and choreography
