September 30, 2021 (Riga, Latvia) – European, North and Latin American and Asian drone show experts have joined efforts for the 2nd year in a row to unveil the best practices of the growing industry and run the Second International Drone Show Competition. The goal is to bring together the best representatives, their shows, animations and business approaches to exchange knowledge about breakthrough sustainable technologies for outdoor light events. Each of six winners will receive a diploma, special prize, and educational and marketing support. 

Participants need to submit their project videos to compete in one or more of six categories: ‘Best drone show 3D animation’, ‘Best drone show up to 100 drones’, ‘Best drone show over 100 drones and up to 1000 drones’, ‘Best drone show over 1000 drones’, ‘Best integrated drone show’, ‘Best drone show business promo video’. The application period is September 30 – November 30, 2021, with the winners to be announced on December 21, 2021. They will be granted diplomas and included in the event promo campaign. Authors of drone show animations will also compete for MacBook Pro 13, while other nomination participants will compete for drone show operator kits (a set of items that an operator always needs for a comfortable process of organizing a drone show). Noticeably, the kit for “Best drone show over 1,000 drones” includes a DJI FPV drone.

‘The first competition was established to create global awareness for artists that there is the industry of drone shows that can open up opportunities. The big idea behind it was to start building up a community of like-minded people passionate about drones and modern art. Within a year, we have observed a rapid growth of drone shows as an event form and decided to expand the concept into a multidisciplinary contest of both animations and real performed drone shows’, comments Alexey Dobrovolskiy, CTO at SPH Engineering.

The competition is initiated and organized by SPH Engineering, the company behind the first commercially available Drone Show Software to manage swarms of light drones. The international judging panel consists of Alexey Dobrovolskiy, SPH Engineering (Latvia); Angelito Diaz Jadormeo, 2020 Competition winner (Philippines); Hyon Lim, Uvify (USA); Luke Carothers, Civil+Structural Engineer Media (USA); and other event and drone industry entrepreneurs, hardware manufacturers, experts at international organizations and educational bodies.

ComeBack Mobility, a medtech startup, raises $1M seed investment for its “Smart Crutch Tip” orthopedic devices that work together with an app, shared by a patient and a doctor. The key investors include the Ukrainian medtech investment fund Fison, Peter Chernyshov, the ex-CEO of the telecom KyivStar, the pharmaceutical giant Farmak, and several angel investors from Ukraine, Belgium and the US.

Smart Crutch Tips are the industry’s first offline, wireless devices with a storage capacity recording up to 1 million steps and battery life of 850 hours of active use, to be attached to any universal round crutches. The technology allows electronic communication with the doctor and provides an overview of the patient’s walking recovery progress. Patients have crutch tips that work together with a smartphone app, where they have rehabilitation programs set by their doctors. The app helps patients to be regular with exercises and keeping the load on the injured leg under the set program while consistently receiving doctor’s recommendations. The medical professional has a web and/or mobile app that contains data about all his or her patients and makes it possible to remotely monitor how the patient loads the injured leg, addressing the patient’s concerns, and adapting the program to their needs.

Weight bearing (WB) in rehabilitation is essential for bone healing in patients with fractures and when following orthopedic surgery. Low-intensity weight bearing exercise has shown to be beneficial in bone healing over non-weight bearing exercises. Yet, according to studies, 6 out of 10 patients don’t follow their doctor’s advice during rehabilitation after their lower limb injury. To completely transform this reality, ComeBack Mobility invented the industry’s first Smart Crutch Tips – a reusable, dynamic feedback device that works together with an application shared by a patient and their doctor.

Smart tips automatically calculate the patient’s current weight bearing on the injured or surgically operated leg while the patient is walking, analyze it and immediately provide feedback to the patient and the doctor on whether any adjustments need to be done — all in real-time. Fitting all popular round crutch brands, the tips are set by the patient on crutches and synced via Bluetooth to smartphones. The patient starts receiving instant feedback on their mobile device, consisting per choice of voice, sound or vibration and from the attached crutch devices per choice of light and/or sound, whether too little or too much load on the leg when they exceed or subceed their medical professional’s prescribed weight bearing status. The device communicates each patient’s rehabilitation results to their physiotherapist and lets them monitor a patient’s daily activity level through the app.

Michael J. Chin, DPM, the medical director of the Running Institute and Windy City Foot and Ankle Physicians LLC, evaluated Smart Crutch Tips and said: “A lot of people don’t know how much pressure they’re putting through their feet when they’re trying to rehabilitate. You can use scales, you can use the weight of their body minus how much pressure they’re putting through it. But this device gives you a kind of instantaneous feedback, which I think for rehabilitation purposes can be very helpful. I like the concept, I like the idea of being able to give feedback – obviously to the patient, but also to the clinician. You take a few steps and already it is logging the steps being taken, the pressure, the feedback. I could hear the actual vibrations so it’s impressive as to how quick that response is.”

It’s not only the physical but also the psychological factor that often hinders patients in properly adhering to the correct rehabilitation process. After surgery, nurses and physiotherapists have the responsibility to encourage the patient to participate in early ambulation. According to the latest clinical study, “nurses are challenged by patients who are not confident enough to mobilize following a lower extremity joint surgery or fracture stabilization. This situation leads to decreased weight bearing, which can hinder the recovery process and future mobility of the patient. If the patient does not comply, the nurse can communicate that to the physician who could provide re-education to the patient on the need to mobilize to improve recovery. The nurse could also communicate ambulation issues to the physical therapy team, who could then work with the patient to increase knowledge and confidence.” The entire process leads not only to an inferior rehabilitation process for the patient, but also to immense medical expenses, along with a greater healing time factor for both the clinician and patient.

Even those patients who feel confident to start with early ambulation, often do not succeed in doing it properly because many use home scales for WB distribution. “The static method of instruction of PWBPs (Partial Weight Bearing Protocol), using bathroom scales, does not seem to translate accurately to dynamic motion, and therefore affects adherence to medical instruction. Practitioners should be aware of the potential errors in reproducing these loads and the potential effect on rehabilitation. These results suggest that practitioners should be cautious when using bathroom scales to teach PWBPs and not rely on them to assess reproduction accuracy during gait,” according to the latest study by Physiotherapy and Sport Rehabilitation School of Health Studies at University of Bradford. ComeBack Mobility has run a similar experiment proving that such a technique does not work. It is not possible to take even 5 steps in a row in the recommended load of +/- 10% of the patient’s weight. For example, if the patient weighs 80 kg (175 lbs) and the recommended 50% of his weight equals 40 kg (88 lbs), then 10% of his weight would be 8 kg (17 lbs), correspondingly the range is 40 kg +/- 8 kg = from 32x to 48 kg (105 lbs).

With over 65 million people suffering leg injuries each year, controlling the rehabilitation process has traditionally been a hit-and-miss affair. The problem is simple – patients are wary of placing too much pressure on their affected limb, while doctors and nurses can’t accurately measure how much weight the patient is placing on their legs – until now.

December 21, 2020 (Riga) – The 1st International Drone Show Choreography Competition, initiated by SPH Engineering’s Drone Show Software (DSS) team, announces results: Angelito D. Jadormeo (the Philippines) is granted the 1st place, additionally, top-5 best designs are selected. Entries were evaluated by an internationally influential jury panel composed of EU, North, and Latin American and Australian drone show professionals and experienced entrepreneurs.

The competition task was to create a 50 drone New Year animation with a maximum length of 5 minutes using Blender animation software. Participants were allowed to make any shapes and use any colors. Angelito D. Jadormeo, the winner, estimates the task as challenging: he had to think about the concept which would involve not only a beautiful design ‘as is’ but be applicable once in flight. ‘You have to plan things like if you need to rig your design in your 3D application of choice, will it be a rotating object, a titling one, or something with more than one articulation. Will your design require dynamics and some sort of procedural animation, what light colors should it display etc’, he explains. 

The jury consisted of 9 people and scored each submission from 1 to 10 in 4 parameters: technical correctness of the animation, artistic value, following the “Winter Holidays / New Year” theme, visual impact. ‘I am delighted to get new names of animation designers out to companies operating in the rapidly developing drone show industry. We have received 153 registrations from over 50 countries. Keeping in mind the high quality of submissions we have selected 3 winners as planned and added a few jury’s favorites’, Alexey Dobrovolskiy, CTO at SPH Engineering, comments.

I am happy that there were many participants who created a drone show for the first time and hopefully we could inspire them for further creative shows’. 

In addition to Angelito D. Jadormeo, other top-5 designers are Isabel Caballero Fernández (Mexico, 2d place), Fu Chongyang (China, 3d place), Julien James Davis (United Kingdom), Hein HtetZaw (Myanmar), Oscar Stefanini (France). All designers are granted with certificates, free Drone Show Software training (worth EUR 12’000 each), and marketing support. The first and second prize winners will also receive complimentary iPhone 12 and Apple Watch Series 6 accordingly.

The International Drone Show Choreography Competition was established to create a global awareness for artists that there is the industry of drone shows that can open up opportunities. The goal was to start building up a community of like-minded people passionate about drones and modern art. The drone light show market, one of the youngest among event solutions, could be estimated at less than $1 bn with approximate growth up +30% per year. It has been growing from a low base: the first drone shows appeared in 2015-16, but they started to be trendy from 2017-18. The main regions of the drone show market are the USA and China. The headquarters of leading market players are there, and also shows are regularly held in these countries. As of today the list of countries with high adoption of drone shows includes, but is not limited with Canada, UAE, Singapore, Philippines, Japan, France, Switzerland, Israel. There is also interest from India, Australia and Latin America. The global demand for large scale events is met by industry players able to provide solutions for 500+ drones, while local events are supported with small shows started with 10+ drones. A drone show could be synchronized with other event components: fireworks, lasers, light & sound.

A COVID-19 pandemic has caused a freeze in the event market, however, surprisingly it has not created pent-up demand for drone light shows.  Self-isolation pushed a global wave of drone art shows enjoyed from the distance. For example, Wuhan, Dubai and Seoul performed huge shows  to say ‘thank you’ to healthcare and essential workers who sacrifice their lives on the pandemic frontline. There were, in fact, dozens of smaller scale shows devoted to frontliners and performed by SMEs globally with no limitation to language and creative goals. In the medium and long term, upon the pandemia completion and economic recovery, the drone show market is thought to continue growing, supported by new event trends and the adoption of laws in favor of UAVs.

Early in September the team of Drone Show Software by SPH Engineering, a Riga based UgCS software developer and integration services provider for unmanned aerial systems, conducted a couple of small working level surveys: in Baltics for potential clients to launch drone shows and globally among existing 50+ clients. As usual, people are observed to keep looking for creative ideas for seasonal greetings for the upcoming 2020-21 winter holidays. Based on these polls, new segments of potential customers who are ready to order a drone show in addition to regular outdoor event planners have been identified. The leading prospective segment has turned to be ‘drone shows for marketing purposes’. A drone show is believed to become a new WOW-trend in brand communication . This way of outdoor promotion, including logos made of drones,  may push the global interest to night sky as a new unexplored marketing space.. Another prospective application for drone shows could be that for extreme sport sites, moto and drag race openings, surf, kite and yachting spots, ski resorts, both mountain and cross-country. Such shows can increase brand awareness of a place, secure media coverage of non-standard performance and social media ‘word of mouth’ organic promo.

It is worth mentioning that the first winter drone show high in the mountains took place in 2018. It was powered by Intel and was devoted to the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Games. Even though the show was prerecorded, it became the record-setting aerial spectacle of that time with a gyrating snowboarder made of 1000+ drones being included into Olympic-themed animations. A year later on Jan. 1, 2020 Swiss St Moritz ski resort became the first ever mountain resort to perform a drone show for New Year celebrations. Swiss Drone Show, Switzerland, as a company focused on drone show solutions, demonstrated a real tech innovation introducing a festive show with 100 drones at 1800 m high in mountains in severe weather conditions (-15 degrees). Probably ski season 2020-21, if not limited with pandemic, will be lightened up with drone shows as light show providers in Europe and North America demonstrate particular interest in the solution.
