A political agreement on a European tyre labelling was reached yesterday between the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission. The new rules improve and strengthen EU tyre labels enabling European consumers to make better choices and bringing energy savings equivalent to taking 4 million cars off EU roads every year.

Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said: “Energy efficiency first also applies to the way we drive! By switching to the most energy efficient tyres, European citizens can reduce their fuel consumption significantly, saving money and helping the environment. This is the European path to real energy security and climate protection: by being more energy efficient in all areas of our life, we can reduce our energy bills and our dependence on imported and costly energy, as we boost industrial competitiveness, create jobs and render the European economy more sustainable”.

The Commission proposed the new Regulation on tyre labelling on 17 May 2018 as part of the clean mobility package. The new rules make the tyre labelsmore visible, more future proof and more accurate. They improve enforcement and market surveillance and they update the label scales to optimise the information on the label. The new more modern design will be aligned with that of the well-known EU energy label, while maintaining its original size and pictograms that are well known by consumers.

A NASA astronaut flying to the International Space Station next spring could be the only American on the station for an extended period because of uncertainty in the status of commercial crew vehicles.

NASA announced Oct. 30 that Chris Cassidy will fly to the station next April on a Soyuz spacecraft with Russian cosmonauts Nikolai Tikhonov and Andrei Babkin. Cassidy will be making his third spaceflight, and second long-duration mission, while Babkin and Tikhonov will each be making their first flights.

Cassidy said at a Nov. 7 briefing at the Johnson Space Center that there will be an overlap for about a week with the departing crew of Jessica Meir, Drew Morgan and Oleg Skripochka, then he and Babkin and Tikhonov will have the station to themselves, perhaps until the end of their mission in October 2020.

“We’re preparing for a six-month duration where it’s just the three of us,” he said. “We’re getting lots of extra training, at specialist levels, for Andrei and Nikolai on all the U.S.-side equipment.”

Cassidy said he’s hopeful that either a Boeing CST-100 Starliner or SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft will visit the station during their time on the station, each carrying two NASA astronauts and, in the case of Starliner, former NASA astronaut and current Boeing employee Chris Ferguson.

A Starliner mission would likely be an extended duration stay, as NASA has been working with Boeing on plans for that for some time. Agency officials said in October the SpaceX Demo-2 mission, the crewed flight test of the Crew Dragon spacecraft, could be extended as well.

However, neither crewed test flight has been scheduled yet, pending the outcome of upcoming tests and other work to certify the spacecraft to carry people. “With luck we’ll have commercial crew,” Cassidy said. “But we’re also ready operationally, mentally, all that, prepared to just be the three of us on the station.”

Delays in commercial crew has forced NASA to adjust flight assignments in order to maintain a presence on the station. The Japanese space agency JAXA had hoped to have one of its astronauts on the station next summer to coincide with the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, but the lack of available seats led NASA to fly Cassidy on the only available Soyuz seat.

At HUAWEI ECO-CONNECT EUROPE 2019, Huawei officially released the AI Ecosystem Program in Europe and announced an investment of 100 million euros in the next 5 years. This program unlocks a new chapter for the computing industry in Europe.

According to Jiang Tao, VP of Intelligent Computing BU, “Huawei is committed to investing in the AI computing industry in Europe, enabling enterprises and individual developers to leverage the Ascend AI series products for technological and business innovation. Over the next 5 years, Huawei plans to invest 100 million euros in the AI Ecosystem Program in Europe, helping industry organizations, 200,000 developers, 500 ISV partners, and 50 universities and research institutes to boost innovation.” The 4 initiatives of the program are as follows:

First, Huawei will work with partners to shape the AI industry in Europe. Specifically, Huawei will collaborate with key organizations in three important areas:

  • Improve regulations and standards on AI ethics and security together with the European AI Alliance and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)
  • Work with the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) to promote the AI Public-Private Partnership (PPP) across the EU, helping boost AI research and vertical industry development
  • Nurture the AI university ecosystem in Europe through academic platforms, like the Falling Walls Foundation

Second, Huawei will develop joint solutions with ISV partners. The OpenLabs in Munich and Paris are AI capability centers that support ISV partners in hardware, development and porting, and joint marketing.

Third, based on the Ascend Developer Community, Huawei will organize offline technological salons and developer contests, and provide technological support to enable developers.

Fourth, Huawei will provide partners with AI courses and teaching materials, and establish joint labs in Europe. 3 AI courses designed for universities will cover basic AI theory, Ascend and mainstream framework development, and Ascend software architecture and development guides. 4 teaching materials on Ascend development will be released in 2020. In addition, Huawei will establish joint labs with partner universities and research institutes for algorithm model development and basic applications.

On mobile devices, apps can access a lot of pertinent information such as contacts, web histories, location, photos, and more. This makes apps more useful—for example, helping you navigate to the desired destination in Maps—but you still want to make sure that you control who sees what.

You can choose how their data is shared with apps and services through several different means:

Permissions: Apps have to ask you for permission to access certain types of data, like your photos or contacts. To grant or revoke permission, head to Settings > Privacy, if you are using Android 10. For Android Pie and below, head to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > App Permissions.

Location permissions: You can tell an app that it may only access your location when you’re actually using that app, as opposed to “all the time” or “never.”

Incognito mode in Google Maps: When you turn on Incognito mode in Maps, your Maps activity on that device, like the places you search for, won’t be saved to your Google Account and won’t be used to personalize your Maps experience.
