I am Professor Tiziana Clara Luisi. I teach modern letters in a middle school. I am a museologist and art historian. I have curated several exhibitions and art projects in Italy and abroad. I have to my credit numerous publications in the field of art history both in Italy and abroad.

Right now I am dealing with the relationship between Italian literature and new technologies. Last work was a report in Spain entitled Divine comedy between tradition and innovation.

Can new technologies help Italian culture yes or no?

Italian culture, especially literature and the arts, have always been considered places of memory, of paper, of images on a canvas, on a wall. The museum is always read as a physical and not a virtual place. My research is the comparison between physical and virtual and my question is can Italian culture also develop through the virtual?

Jessica Irwin is an archaeologist who has spent the past decade working around the Americas. She is currently the Assistant Director for the Center for Digital Antiquity at Arizona State University. Jessica’s specialties include the archaeology of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the archaeology of plantations, and underwater archaeology. Jessica is an advocate for making archaeological and cultural material more accessible and usable. She has held positions at James Madisons Montpelier, The South Carolina Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology, as well as at commercial organizations. With experience in such a wide geographic area shifting focus from single-site archaeological research to larger-scale projects has become a passion of hers. She now works to build the tools needed to make archaeology accessible, shareable and usable for all people.

GIS Developer at Chiva Chaitya Organization, Nepal

I am a Telecommunications Engineer with strong skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), data analysis, and data transformations. I worked as Radio and Access Network Engineer at an emerging Telecom company in Nepal for 3 years and then moved to Australia. Currently, I am based in Melbourne where I am working as a GIS consultant and software developer in various sectors such as utilities, construction, telecom network design.

I was born and raised in Kathmandu and always had a deep spiritual connection with chivas, chaityas and temples. While growing up, I realized Kathmandu valley is culturally and archaeologically unique from other cities in Nepal and in the world. I realized chivas were an integral part of life in Kathmandu and this makes Kathmandu unique and beautiful. Although Iam currently far away from Kathmandu, I actively participate in the mission of Chiva Chaitya Organization by providing technology support to the organization.

Role of GIS in documentation and preservation of Chivas Chaityas.

Chivas and Chaityas are cultural shrines established by the general public in Kathmandu valley. Estimated to be in numbers more than 2000 all over Kathmandu, some of them were established 1500 years ago. Due to sheer number of sites, it was quite difficult to locate and record them without using technology. We will demonstrate how Geographic Information Systems has enabled us to catalog these monuments and provided valuable location insights to help in their preservation.

Cultural Manager, Ecuador

Cultural Manager, specialized in the operation of multidisciplinary projects for the expansion of visual arts, museums, Cultural Heritage and historical tourism. In addition, he is an expert analyzing public cultural policies.

His main researches emphasize the role of public policies in the creation of cultural content. Also, he examines the emergence or the extinction of institutions in the sector. His main proposal is to strengthen cultural institutions with the co-construction, the commons, and the social and solidarity-based economy.

His first approach to cultural and heritage institutions was in 2009, when he joined the City Museums Foundation in Quito, Ecuador. There, he developed different programs for the education department. Also, he contributed to elaborate educational and mediation projects, where the link with  communities was an important component for success.

Afterwards, he accomplished as assistant director in Casa del Alabado Pre-Columbian Art Museum. The main responsibilities, in addition to the financial ones, were the management of archaeological collection, the regularization of digital content and community manager.

His main contribution to strengthen ecuadorian cultural institutions was the direction of Archaeological Museums belonging to the Metropolitan Heritage Institute of Quito. He established a new management model according to contemporary needs, optimizing economic resources and consolidating human talent.

In addition, he has been related to cultural projects at Casa de las Artes La Ronda, Metropolitan Cultural Center of Quito, Cultural Center Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid and Amatller House Museum in Barcelona.

With this session you would understand the current situation of cultural institutions under the regulation of policies in democratic states. It will be described the needs of both those the citizens and the cultural workers.

Finally, It  will be analyzed the ways in which institutions adapt to the contemporary changes in the public and private sector. You will explore the basis of commons in culture, co-construction processes and solidarity-based economy like options to support the crisis of the cultural sector.

Mark Osterman has a Doctor of Education with a research focus in arts, literacy and technology. Mr. Osterman has taught at Miami Dade College, facilitated specialized workshops in art educational theory and practice for the University of Miami, The Lowe Art Museum and The Wolfsonian-FIU. He has presented nationally on technology in museums and art educational theory and research studies and has published work in the Journal of Museum Education and the Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia among others. Mr. Osterman has worked for The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Art and Design, The Wolfsonian-FIU, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and currently at the Lowe Art Museum University of Miami. His museum work has focused on strategic thinking, interpretive technology initiatives, curriculum development, and developing evaluation and assessment tools related to museum practice.

Session: Hidden Stories – New Voices: This project focuses on thinking about the way people live and engage with culture in its broadest sense through digital technology and trying to understand what that means for how people are going to engage with traditional arts and cultural forms.

This project attempts to make our cultural assets more available and usable to our audiences so that they can be either co-creators or creators in their own right using the assets we have. The intention is to do this while avoiding the false dichotomy that by being sensitive and/or responsive to the audience that we are denigrating our expert authority. We hope for both to coexist and even thrive.

Debajit Ghosh is a trainee in the field of archaeology based in India. He has been trained in archaeological research through different kinds of perspectives. He has participated in a number of excavations and explorations across India. He has also expertise in blogging, leadership, and public speaking. He has been engaging in the domain of public awareness of heritage for more than 2 years. He has been writing blogs on the cultural heritage of ancient Egyptian Civilization for school children in the most possible simplified language. Apart from this, he has also been a Gender Champion in the university during his masters’ course where he has initiated interactive sessions of gender-related issues. Overall, he has a keen interest in heritage studies with a main focus on public interaction and awareness and aims at pursuing research in this field.

This session will evaluate the potentiality of the measures taken by some of the private organizations and freelancers in promoting the digitization of cultural heritage of India through their innovative initiatives. This session will mainly focus on three case studies on virtual heritage walk initiative, heritage blogging, and heritage podcasting respectively in the Indian context and try to understand the potentiality of these private sectors in the digitization of cultural heritage of India.

Ana Mafalda Cardeira (Lisbon, 1990) holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts, Sciences of Art, from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL), with a thesis focused on the modern influences in academic nude paintings of the FBAUL Collection. Also holds a Master’s Degree in Sciences of Conservation, Restoration and Production of Contemporary Art by the same institution, with a thesis titled ‘Material and Technical Characterization of Academic Nude Paintings” by José Veloso Salgado, belonging to the Collection of FBAUL’. As well as a Post-Graduation in Modern and Contemporary History, major in International Relations at the Superior Institute of Business and Labour Sciences of Lisbon. Was granted the Doctoral Program HERITAS, is a Grad Researcher Collaborator at Artistic Studies Research Centre / Faculty of Fine Arts and HERCULES Laboratory / University of Évora. Currently, is a lecturer of Materials Technologies and Behavior, as well as, Analytical Methods Applied to Art and Heritage at the Professional School of Heritage at Sintra. Has been an author of internationally published work in the field of analytical research of modern and contemporary artwork and conducted a team of colleagues in the development of the new FBAUL Virtual Museum, as Project Manager.

New virtual museum of the faculty of fine arts of Lisbon: Collections and virtual tour

In 2013, an interdisciplinary team managed by Ana Mafalda Cardeira proposed, under the Program of Support for Extracurricular Activities of the University of Lisbon, developments, digitalization of Engraving Collection and creation of a Virtual Tour of the Convent of São Francisco (Lisbon), the current Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon. The website has been redesigned to improve the user experience and interface, which became available in its entirety, and the Virtual Tour, composed of museum information from Sculptures exposed at the Faculty.

Freelance Archaeological/Historical Illustration at Killin & Tay Studios, Canada

Alexis Cameron Ironside is an archaeological and historical illustrator who specializes in artefact illustration and creating illustration workshops for academic and public participation. She has developed and ran illustration and ceramic classes/workshops for both postgraduate archaeology students but also for the public (including children’s programs). She has also run workshops for students on how to effectively engage with the public at historical and archaeological sites. Her research centres around how to utilize historical illustrations in research and human remains rights in archaeological and historical practise.

Project lead “Transfer of Knowledge” at SHMH (Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg / Historic Museums Hamburg Foundation), Germany

Dr. Elisabeth Böhm works as projectlead for the Historic Museums Hamburg Foundation. It’s her task to build up a digital knowledge management system connecting several museums and digital infrastructure for workflows in order to share and communicate content throughout the foundation. The project “Transfer of Knowledge” established smaller, scalable projects based in three of the museums in order to implement new formats combining digital and analogue spheres. These projects gave impulses on how to expand the database in order to transform it into a knowledge-hub containing manifold information on objects, exhibitions, projects, research and restauration besides the history of Hamburg, its citizens and society.
Elisabeth Böhm is member of the Europeana Network Association, ICOM and Deutscher Museumsbund. She contributed to several conferences on topics concerning knowledge management in museums, digital infrastructure and becoming a more digital museum by implementing scalable projects. She is focussing on interoperability and exchange of information and data and looks beyond the collection only to reach audiences with cultural heritage.
Elisabeth Böhm published online on topics concerning her project and on cultural heritage in broader contexts including narrativity and multi-layered communications. Before joining the Historic Museums Hamburg Foundation she has been working as assistant curator at Weserburg | Museum für modern Kunst in Bremen. Her interests beyond making the GLAM-sector more digital combine cooking, opera and yoga.

Session: More than online collections – digital projects in museums

As many museums develop digital strategies and present their collections online other cultural heritage organizations struggle to find financial and technical means in order to become more digital.

This paper presents thoughts and experiences on the way to develop a wider range of digital projects within one organization in order to communicate better with audiences by bridging gaps between digital and analogue. By implementing scalable projects, the path towards a digital organization becomes more viable.
