No one or enterprise can do everything by its own or using the internal resources. Thus, it is important to collaborate with others either because one might lack the resources or the know-how.
Traditionally, it was easy to have a list of partners and to right a contract that will govern the relation between the owner and the contracted party. Emerging technologies and business dynamics created an environment where traditional contracts are no longer fit; similarly, are the contracting styles, processes, and procedures.
Industry 4.0 and Digital Transformation is transforming everything and creating a new business future. Contracts are affected in several aspects including:
• Having more contracts and more options
• The need to act quickly and timely
• The focus on continuous innovation and partnership
I am discussing a real scenario from my experience. Aqarat has been a master real-estate and land developer since 1945, They used to acquire a huge land of say 1 Million Square meters, they develop it in few years and sell into pieces called blocks and plots after making the main infrastructure of streets, electricity and water. In this Aqarat are used to contract with 2 or 3 subcontractors to complete the job.
Today, we are moving toward building a smart city in which you need to care about implementation and operation. Emerging technologies are major part of the city. We cannot rely on 2 or 3 main contractors; we need to introduce new concepts such as
• Agile planning and implementation
• Long life innovation and operation
• Value deconstruction and complex infrastructure
• Working at the leading edge
For this reason, we need to deal with large number of contracts to avoid utilizing old technology and have a multilayer contractor who are not delivering value in agile manner.
Innovative contracts and contracting styles are utilized to improve efficiencies, cope with the organization needs, and facilitate agile, trusted, and near real time transactions.
One Important characteristic of the Industry 4.0 enabled projects is inviting a lot of changes because the final product cannot be defined from the early start, and here it comes the requirement for innovative contracting.
Innovative contracts are introduced to comprise a set of holistically approached techniques that aim at enhancing the collaboration between stakeholders and combine several factors of effectiveness.

Gokul Srinivasan (male) M.Sc. Gokul has an educational background in robotics (unmanned aerial systems) and artificial intelligence from University of Texas. After graduating from UT, he gained field experience with UAVs (commercial, tactical & defense), sensor systems, ground systems working with corporations such as GE and gained experience working on DoD projects implementing concepts related to autonomous unmanned airborne systems. During that time, he also held TS security clearance. After moving to Finland, he co-founded a company that did the first ever commercial launch of autonomous drone deliveries while leading a team of 20 experts. The drones completed more than 100 BVLOS autonomous flights during the course of the commercial launch. Following that, he was listed as one of the top 5 founders in Finland in 2019 (Nordic Startup Awards). Over the period of 3 years, Gokul contributed to 4 patents (2 in the US, 2 in Finland, patent currently under review) involving AI, drones, and defense/commercial applications. He is the executive director of the New York Center for Strategic Innovation and the Boston Center for Smart Building Technology. He was educated at Pratt Institute, Pace University and at the University of Oxford. He has taught at the School of Visual Arts, the Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams University, the Parsons School of Design, New York University, and at the New York Institute of Technology where he served as associate dean for the School of Architecture and Design and has been a visiting critic at the WE School, the United Nations, Oxford Brooks University, the University of Chile, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Columbia University and at Yale University.

Session: Climate change COVID-19 Social unrest: A timely opportunity for alignment and progress

Our world is on the cusp of a tipping point and the global economy urgently needs to decarbonize to avert the worst impacts of climate change. New technologies have and will continue to be critical in addressing this crisis, however, these technologies will only be as effective as the workforce tasked with designing, installing and operating them. Large portions of the incumbent workforce began their careers before the last two decades of rapid technological advances in building sciences, and women and people of color are underrepresented in this workforce. Young people interested in addressing climate change do not always see the connection to a career in the building trades or recognize the opportunity for good paying jobs and career growth in this field. Existing training tends to focus too much on the “what” of energy efficiency through proprietary and vendor-specific instructions, and very little on the “why” and “how” of energy efficiency developed through a holistic understanding of a building as a collection of interrelated systems. A lack of interdisciplinary training and education continues to prevent full realization of energy savings. The existing paradigm of trades-specialization, while important for things like licensures, does not equip workers with the full range of knowledge required to design, build, and operate the 21st century built environment. Recognizing these challenges and opportunities, a wide range of stakeholders including employers, energy efficiency program administrators, community colleges, and local governments, are collaborating to create a new occupational ecosystem for clean energy workers of the future. Workforce development provides economic opportunity to historically disadvantaged communities while also solving a critical need in the fight against climate change. This multifaceted approach to addressing the clean energy labor shortage in Boston will contribute to solving the information, knowledge and equity gaps in the skilled trades. While this approach may not be directly replicable in every region, there are lessons-learned that can help inform similar collaborations nationally. The needs of the energy efficiency workforce will almost certainly evolve as technologies and strategies change over time, but the collaborative framework developed in Boston can serve as a model for one way to build a diverse clean energy workforce of the future.

Lab Manager at BoMax Hydrogen, LLC., USA

Edward was born and raised in central Florida. After studying philosophy in Australia, he returned back to the United States to once again reside in central Florida. He now works at three different jobs, one of which is as a lab Technician for Bomax.

Through working with Bomax, he has entered into the renewable energy landscape of green hydrogen.

He has taken great interest In seeing how this hydrogen is extremely important for the future of energy throughout the world. The world is demanding clean renewable energy and Edward is ready to devote his time and attention to seeing that the world is provided with technology that Bomax has to offer.

BoMax Hydrogen is the missing piece of the Hydrogen Puzzle

The appeal of BoMax Hydrogen is that it is a carbon free green method for making pure hydrogen on site where it is needed for use in fuel cells. BoMax combines inexpensive earth materials that form its nanoparticles with a natural catalyst extracted from soil bacteria. The reactants are put in front of visible light LEDs and they make hydrogen. This patented system (March 2017) is based on the dissertation work of Dr. Deborah Maxwell while at the University of Central Florida. Since opening the BoMax lab in the Space Life Sciences Lab at Kennedy Space Center, we have optimized the hydrogen production to the point of transitioning to construct prototypes.
