As we speak about the future of education, the only way it responds to the demands of progressive reality is the case when it teaches students investigate, prototype, fail and try again showing that each iteration may lead to better ideas. This experience boosts creative confidence in kids helping them realize that they can be contributors no matter what their age is.

Technology plays a central role in this process offering all types of gadgets and programs aimed at innovative approach to educational routine.

Technology may be integrated in educational curriculum without much harm to traditional learning since they have same goals and objectives. Not surprisingly, that to reach these goals we are picking a slightly different way – allowing students be co-creators instead of just passive listeners but in the end, it will be beneficial for the teaching and learning in general.

Given that 69% of today’s children will end up working in jobs that don’t yet exist it’s crucial to encourage kids become life-long learners and adopt design thinking approach.

As a teacher and as a teacher who used to be quite skeptical about using technologies in a classroom, I should say that I’ve changed my mind and realized that there’s a huge potential and it has always been there. And the potential is not about the technology itself, it’s about the learning environment that the technology enables, it’s about to empower teachers, children and parents with real-time data and real-time excess to information. So that you can personalize learning in a way that’s never been possible before.

Speaking about technologies in the classroom, I can see great potential in global usage of the Cloud for storage of learning materials, 3-d printing implemented in chemistry, biology and geometry lessons. And of course, virtual classrooms – current global quarantine caused by Covid-19 proved that being able to efficiently communicate via Skype or Zoom is the key to unconditional learning when nothing can get in the way. One of my friends, a British citizen, who for many years lived and worked as a teacher in China, had to go back to the UK because of the virus restrictions, successfully continued giving lessons to his Chinese students online without any harm to the engagement level and overall progress.

Technologies do not harm creativity as it thought to be – it encourages creativity and boosts it to the next level.

Dr. Ismail Sayeed

Physician. Entrepreneur. Author. Startup Founder. Mentor.

MBBS MMed MSc | Global Health entrepreneur | Amazon Author | Founder of VIOS, A medical app for Doctors, made by Doctors

The 21st century is not like the previous eras in human history. The Industrial revolution was a boon to mankind as much as the science of hygiene and preventive medicine. The previous century provided the gateway to the virtual marketplace, the online platform for the instantaneous trade of goods and services, at a click of a plastic key, free from geographic boundaries. The digital biosphere is intricately maintained and promoted by millions of connected buyers and customers, who can often switch roles faster than the speed of thought. The new digital economy has created the well known gig economy, the ability to sell highly specialised niche services at an affordable price to a worldwide market.

This freedom from strictly governed societal roles that used to exist during the time of mass corporatisation of industries has given people the chance to earn a sustainable livelihood using digital tools and crafted services. There is no better time to be a digital entrepreneur than this new century as access to information via democratised technology is now widely available. No longer do people have to be defined by the teachings of an institution, and nothing else, and also work in industries that claim to be in need of such highly educated professionals.

Even as the 4th Industrial Revolution, AI and other ultra specialised phenomena sweep the globe, human resources management has not aligned its core strategies to help give skilled individuals a chance to a decent earned livelihood. The Health sector is perhaps the worst organised and poorly optimised industry till date. Although rapid strides in public health activities has greatly expanded our lifespans, which is directly correlated with increased global GDP and ofcourse rising out of poverty, there is a pandemic of societal injustice to healthcare professionals.

If you are a doctor reading this, or have a doctor associate in your social circle, you know very well the difficult tasks that we have agreed to take on as part of a lifelong investment in caring for our human brethren. We sacrificed almost an entire decade of our productive lives to learn about the frailty of the human condition. We spent countless hours in memorising diseases and dosages, fine-tuning delicate movements in deliveries, bone setting, suturing, palpation and performing various surgical intervention, and let us not forget the mentally exhausting act of continuous medical education by way of highly standardised examinations. Continuously spending expensive resources on the rapid acquisitions of domestic and foreign degrees. In the hopes of being translated into the possibility of a fulfilling and prosperous lifelong career.

If you are reading this article, you and I have now realised the harsh reality of this charade.

Like me you too have successfully completed many years of rigorous military doctrine style training and have amassed a collection of degrees and other abbreviations that we can hang on the walls of our empty practices, or added to the end of our not-s0-significant names. Many of you may have asked your seniors by now about how we can ‘growth-hack’ our careers to atleast make ends meet. Surely there is some secret method to earn more money, without taking up even more debt for the next degree? Your seniors would say not to obsess over money as the medical career is a noble/humble pursuit to help heal our fellow neighbor.

  • Some would perhaps recommend that you close down your private chamber and join a large corporate medical organisation
  • If you are already in a massive hospital, then maybe you should resign and start your own practice
  • Have you considered moving abroad to work in a massive hospital or private practice in that country?

The frustrating circle of the same advice from almost retired physicians, who are well versed in the norms of a bygone era, often demotivates the healthcare professional from leading a purposeful life and puts a great strain on the quality of their long term career motives. Many have resigned to the fate that one must intentionally lead a humble but debt-ridden lifestyle, when their peers from other professions have greatly advanced their financial stability.

Lyubomir Atanasov is the CEO at IMG – Internet Media Group and managing partner at digital agency Tendrik Europe. Through the years, he has actively grown several brands, one of them being IMG IT Academy.

He has a lot of experience in the digital marketing field, strategic marketing, and advertising. He is the founder of Digital4 Foundation, as well as an organizer of DiTech Expo, Bulgarian Digital Week, and all conferences in digital technologies, having the project name Digital4Bulgaria, which takes place in the biggest cities in Bulgaria.

Why does the digitalization of the business matter?

The digital transformation of the business is a process that every company will have to go through sooner or later. As we know, people spend a big part of their time on the Internet nowadays, looking for information, communication, shopping.

We already live in two parallel universes – the real one and the virtual one. We can’t just pass by the virtual, that why is good to use it for seeking progress of our business. This has been proven very clearly after the pandemic and the realignment of the massive count of companies in the online space.

The companies have to be where their clients are. The tools of digital marketing allow companies to advertise, collect and analyze valuable data in real-time. Digitalization is also connected to the automation of internal processes of the company, the goal is to become more efficient, lower expenses, and increase sales. Using platforms for communication is part of our daily life.

Sadly, the process of using digital benefits is still in its beginning. For example, 80 of the top 100 companies in the Plovdiv region aren’t taking the possibilities that digital marketing offers. I hope this will change soon. Personally, I see a lot of positive indications that we’re striving towards changing the general business model to business digitalization. Business is changing and there’s no going back.

Is it important for all businesses to build an online appearance?

Every business, no matter its field or how big it is, can gain real benefits from building an online appearance. A big part of potential clients will search for information on the Internet before making the decision of where to buy from. If a certain business is not actively online, the customers will choose to buy from somewhere else. Even when it comes to B2B companies, their online appearance can play a key role when closing serious deals and helping the process of finding new prospects.

Furthermore, if business owners effectively take the opportunities of digital technologies, they can easily reach a bigger circle of clients, increase sales and profits.

Does a universal strategy exist in the digital world?

Maybe a lot of people wish to be strategy like this and thing to be easy. Unfortunately, there are no universal decisions. The individual method which will reach the wanted results depends on the business, its needs, and the set goals.

However, one big part is general. It is like reading twenty books on marketing and entrepreneurship. Eventually, you will understand that the core of every book is the same in combination with a lot of practice. There are massive online resources that can give us the proper answers. Theory in practice is the key for most businesses. There is foundation, creativity, testing, optimizing, and if it’s not working, trying another strategy.

What are your observations, does the Bulgarian companies taking the possibilities of digital marketing?

What I see is that the Bulgarian companies more actively use the options for digitalization of their business and digital services like online marketing and advertising, web developments, cloud systems, etc. Some because they really realize the gains and benefits. Others are more at the beginning of this realization but see that their competitors’ progress tremendously which makes them take action too.

What do you think is going to happen after we go through the crisis COVID-19?

I think the European Union will be very active on the subject “Digitalization of the business” right away after the crisis. In concrete directions related to electronic healthcare, digital education, electronic government, management, and data sharing.

The business, on the other hand, will be acting in this direction and we personally get a lot of calls on that subject to help with our expertise. As a matter of fact, no one expected that offline businesses will only have income from their online channels for a period of time. Whoever had them has been working on them, whoever hasn’t, it is time to seriously consider that.

1. What’s your story, how did you become an innovator in healthcare?

My name is Dr. Ismail Sayeed, I am physician entrepreneur and health tech startup founder in Dhaka, Bangladesh
I started my career as a pediatrician, graduated and trained from a medical university from UAE.
I had 6.5yrs experience as a child specialist, especially in NICU setting (neonatal intensive care) in the private and public sector in UAE, Chicago, India, Egypt and in Bangladesh.
I was not fulfilled in clinical medicine.
Even after getting 2 Masters degrees in Global Health (Queen Mary University of London) & Masters in Pediatric Medicine (University of Sydney), and working in an NGO as a healthcare systems consultant.
I decided to try out healthcare entrepreneurship.
Initially I just wanted to start any kind of medical-related business – that mindset failed me 6 times in a few short years.
Later I focused on the problems affecting my doctor comrades in Bangladesh and in other countries.
After much analysis I realised it was a problem/pain related to communication between doctors and patients i.e. branding of doctors to the right patients and lead generation of patients to doctors in an efficient way.
Quite simply I was focused on sustainable healthcare optimisation, using mobile technologies as a tool.

2. Why is it important for companies to innovate and invest in modern technologies?

  • Future-proof & Quarantine-proof
  • To have an agile/lean methodology
  • Stay ahead of consumer purchasing behaviour
  • To intensively incorporate digital marketing as a core strength of business operations
  • Modern technology allows any sized company to rapidly assemble a team, or disperse into remote specialised work instantly
  • Modern technology is the main tool of disruption, scalability, pivoting and being a cost-effective method of distribution i.e. easier to achieve economies of scale
  • Skills dependent human resources are easier to acquire and mentor

3. What is the definition of digital health?

Any operational process that seeks to alter or upgrade the natural life process of the end user, using IT enabled tools.

  • Detect life process abnormalities (blood pressure)
  • Monitor changes to systems (muscle growth)
  • Alter behaviours (smart watch to remind you to be active)
  • Communicate information (Covid infection signs)
  • Enable access to specialised services (nearest available gynecologist)

4. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve discovered working in the digital health space?

  • How pro-tech business many governments are
  • Ability to change any feature quickly and effectively without recalling any made products (app updates)
  • Zero cost of manufacturing (app downloads)
  • Easily measurable KPI (churn rate, subscriptions)
  • Robust business models (SAAS)
  • Ability to incorporate multiple revenue streams eg. saas, ecommerce, content marketing
  • Easier to incorporate call-to-action in digital ads eg. direct downloads from FB

5. What are the benefits and risks of delivering mental health care through technology instead of face-to-face?

BENEFITS:

  • Anonymity for patients
  • Access
  • Acceptance of a digital mental health platform
  • Professional testimonial and transparency of provider before purchasing an appointment timeslot
  • Patient is in control of conversation duration i.e. can hang up the call if the session is too intense or       inconvenient

RISKS:

  • Inability of provider to assess subtle nuances during session eg. body language or partner responses (couples counselling)
  • Cannot take action in emergency situations eg. high suicide/violence/abuse risk
  • Cyber security issues
  • Patient has no guarantee that session is recorded or viewed by third party
  • So in your opinion, how is digital health going to look in the next 10 years?

6. So in your opinion, how is digital health going to look in the next 10 years?

Greater investment from public health departments, health insurers, VC, pharmaceutical industry
Intensely incorporated into mainstream healthcare systems
Number of frontline doctors will decrease – AI chatbots, IoT, app, wearables will produce the health data, robots will take the history taking, epharma apps will deliver the meds to you via drone delivery….but actual counselling on chronic diseases, grief, mental health, social health and behaviour modification processes will be supported by a small but highly specialised providers trained in PHD level soft skills.

7. If there were some key pieces of advice you would give to a client before they embark on a major digital transformation project, what would it be?

Always ask the following questions first:

  • What is the problem you are trying to solve?
  • How big of a problem is it?
  • Is it related to a short term event, an emerging trend or the pain has always been there in that population group?
  • What would an ideal solution do to that problem and what would it look like?
  • How would you deliver/package that solution?
  • Does it have to be a tech-based solution?
  • What is the cheapest, simplest, easily upgradeable version of that solution can you make it quickly (but still functional)?
  • Why are you doing this alone? Create your A-Team who will build your solution, sell it…..and also own shares of it
